Law Series, Letters "X", "Y" and "Z"

“Millions for defense, but not one cent for tribute”  With the three toughest letters of the alphabet left in my Law A-Z series, it was time to wrap up XY and Z.  Luckily, way back in 1778 an important event is our history occurred.  It was called the “XYZ Affair” (I’m sure all of you remember from social studies).  Anyway, the affair declared to the world that the United States does not exchange peace for money.  Certainly those who have loved ones held as hostages would be very happy to exchange money for an immediate release.  But it is illegal to do so, and thus a topic ripe for discussion on this morning’s “Open” tv show.   A new legal series is on the way starting in January.  Meanwhile, here is the link to our last Law A-Z series starring the letters XY and Z:

Law Series, Letter "W"

Although you may qualify for Worker’s Compensation, many times your employer’s insurance company will dispute not only the severity of the injury, but whether the injury itself was caused by your work related accident.   This morning on the television show “Open”, I continued my Law A-Z discussion as I tackled the letter “W”.  If you have a worker’s compensation claim there are tips you should know to make sure your claim will be getting the proper attention.  Watch tonight for the recablecast, Cablevision, channel 67.  Or, the segment is now online:

Law A-Z Series, Letter "V"

As we head toward the end of the alphabet, I continued my A-Z Legal Series on the morning show “Open”.  Letter “V” brings us to veterinary malpractice.  The law of veterinary malpractice is akin to medical malpractice.  The biggest issue is determining whether your case is really one that arises out of a malpractice or simple negligence.  Also, you may have a contractual claim.  The segment was live, but now is online:

Law A-Z Series, "Letter U"

Recently lawsuits have been filed throughout the country accusing labor unions of not allowing its members to opt out of the group.  Unions have always been controversial.  This morning on the tv show “Open” I continued my Law A-Z series with the letter “U” front and center.  Well, actually, just up front.  This week:  Unions and the law.  Watch tonight for the recablecast, Cablevision, channel 67.  Fios, channel 33.   The show is not online:

Law A-Z Series, "Letter T"

It was nice to be back on set during this mornings TV show "Open".   As we are up to the letter "T", I thought it was time to discuss "trusts".  A trust is a written document that you create during your lifetime.  Watch tonight for the recablecast on Cablevision channed 67 and Fios channel 33 to learn all you need to know about "Living Trusts".

Law A-Z Series, "Letter S"

Small Claims Court is an informal court where individuals can sue for money only.  You don't need a lawyer, but you do need to know how to be your own advocate.  On this mornings tv show "Open" I continued my Law A-Z series by discussing our most important, but least appreciated court, Small Claims Court.  The segment is now online:

Law A-Z Series, Letter R (Con't)

This morning on the tv show "Open" I continued my discussion of Renter's Rights.  During my last appearance I focused on what a prospective tenant should know before signing his/her lease.  This morning I assumed that the lease was already signed.  I started with the "Warranty of Habitability" and continued from there.  The interview is now online:

Law A-Z Series, "Letter R"

Now that's an easier letter.  Many legal topics start with the letter "R".  I picked "Renter's Rights" (not because there are two "R"'s) because homeownership is not for everyone.  On today's live "Open" I continued my Law A-Z series and discussed what you should do before signing a lease.   The best tip I can give, get the lease to an attorney to review, and make sure you have a right to renewal.

Law A-Z Series, "Letter Q"

It was time to get back to the studio and continue my Law A-Z series.  Maybe it was the fear of coming up with a topic that started with the letter "Q" that kept me away for so long.  But I found a good one:  "Quit Claim Deeds".  A quit claim deed transfers to the grantee any and all of the legal rights the grantor has in a parcel of real property.  But the grantor does not "warrant" that his/her title is valid so be very careful when accepting this type of deed.  It may be a quick type of deed (pardon the pun), but it doesn't protect you as well as a general warranty deed.
