Ask Your Lawyer, "Gentrification and Rent Evictions"

During this week’s ‪#‎AskYourLawyer‬ segment on the morning show “Open” I answered the following email concerning gentrification and rent evictions: “My mother and I live in the South Bronx. Recently her rent has tripled. When I asked her why, she said her landlord told her that the area is becoming more popular. My mother has been living in the same apartment for 40 years. Does the landlord have a right to force her to pay such high rent now that people want to live here? Sonya D.”
Here is my response. Keep the emails coming……

Back to the fall, back to our "Ask Your Lawyer Segment". I answered the following email on air: “My mother cleans offices in a Manhattan building. Last week she was injured while helping clean a floor that was under construction. She was told by a lawyer that she cannot sue because of workers compensation. Is this true?” -Carlos, Burnside

Ask Your Lawyer Series, Pregnancy Discrimination

In this week’s “Ask Your Lawyer” segment on the morning show “Open” I answered this email from Patricia (South Bronx):  “I work in a hair salon in the South Bronx and am 7 months pregnant.  I am being asked to sweep the hair off the floor even though I have told the manager that it hurts my back.  The doctor said I should avoid bending over.  Do I have any rights or do I have to do this type of work.  I would much rather sit at the reception desk checking in customers?”   The segment is now online:

Ask Your Lawyer Series, Intestacy

New Year, new law series:  Introducing “Ask your Lawyer”.   I usually receive several emails commenting on my Wednesday morning weekly appearance on the Bronxnet’s “Open” television show.  Many of those emails ask for advice that I give in private.  During this year I will now read one (maybe two) emails on the air every Wednesday while attempting to answer your question.   This morning I read the following email:  “My Aunt has 2 biological children and 3 adopted children (all adults now).  She bought a house and would like to make sure the house goes to her biological kids if something were to happen to her and/or her husband.  She wants to keep from the house having split 5 ways.  How can she achieve this?  What should she know?  Ingrid, Riverdale”.  I answered her question.  Here is the link to the segment now online:
