During this week’s #AskYourLawyer segment on the morning show “Open” I answered the following email concerning gentrification and rent evictions: “My mother and I live in the South Bronx. Recently her rent has tripled. When I asked her why, she said her landlord told her that the area is becoming more popular. My mother has been living in the same apartment for 40 years. Does the landlord have a right to force her to pay such high rent now that people want to live here? Sonya D.”
